CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: ₹103 crore spent on ₹29 crore scheme, yet water did not reach fields

A CAG report has raised serious questions over the implementation of an irrigation-related scheme. According to the report, despite ₹103 crore being spent on a scheme with an estimated cost of ₹29 crore, farmers did not receive the expected benefit. Even after heavy expenditure, water not reaching the fields has raised questions over the objective of the scheme and the use of government funds.

The aim of the scheme was to provide irrigation facilities to farmers and increase the availability of water for cultivation. It was expected to improve agricultural production and give farmers a better arrangement for irrigation. However, the gap between the expenditure and the benefit reflected in the report has drawn attention to the implementation of the project.

The CAG, or the Comptroller and Auditor General of India, is considered important for examining expenditure, procedures and execution of work in government schemes. In this case, the issue of farmers not receiving benefits despite spending several times more than the approved cost is linked to financial management and accountability.

In this situation, a review is necessary of the expenditure on the scheme, the actual progress of works and the obstacles in providing irrigation facilities. It will also be necessary to clarify why the additional expenditure occurred and why the set targets could not be achieved. At present, the name of the scheme, the related area and the detailed findings recorded in the CAG report need confirmation. Once these facts come forward, the position on responsibility and further action will become clearer.
