CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Modern signaling systems in railways enhance the safety of train operations. The upgradation and replacement of equipment used in Indian Railways is an ongoing process, carried out based on the condition, operational requirements, and availability of resources. Under the guidance of the General Manager and the direction of the Principal Chief Signal and Telecommunications Engineer, the West Central Railway is rapidly upgrading its signaling system, with new types of interlocking systems being installed on various rail sections and replacing the old interlocking systems. Electronic interlocking is being widely adopted to digitize and modernize train operations and enhance safety.

West Central Railway has always been at the forefront of providing various facilities related to safety and security for passengers. As part of this initiative, West Central Railway has introduced electronic interlocking systems at 135 stations, ensuring precise control over train movements and eliminating the possibility of human error. West Central Railway is progressively replacing all electrical signaling systems with new computer-based electronic interlocking systems. Specifically, 45 stations each in the Jabalpur, Bhopal, and Kota divisions, totaling 135 stations, have been equipped with computer-based electronic interlocking systems. Remaining stations will also be equipped with advanced electronic interlocking systems in the near future.

Electronic interlocking uses computer-based systems and electronic equipment to control signals, points, and level-crossing gates. Unlike traditional electrical relay interlocking systems, which rely on numerous wires and relays, electronic interlocking uses software and electronic components to manage the logic. It reads inputs from signaling gear in the yard and processes commands from the operational console (VDU) in a fail-safe manner.

This technology has brought several benefits, significantly impacting safety and helping to increase train speeds. The system reduces the risk of accidents caused by conflicting routes, incorrect signals, or human error. Electronic interlocking can be integrated with the Kavach technology as well as with centralized traffic control systems. Additionally, it enables efficient operations, reducing operational time.

West Central Railway is playing a leading role in utilizing new modern technology for safe and secure rail operations.
