CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: In today’s digital era, working for long periods on computer, laptop and mobile screens has become part of people’s daily routine. Office employees, students and people working online spend several hours every day in front of screens. Continuous screen viewing can cause problems such as eye fatigue, dryness, irritation, blurred vision and headaches. To reduce this strain on the eyes, experts often advise following the 20-20-20 rule.
What is the 20-20-20 rule?
The rule is very simple. According to it, after looking at a screen for every 20 minutes, one should take a break of about 20 seconds and, during that time, look at an object placed around 20 feet, or about 6 metres, away. This gives the eyes some relief from continuously focusing on a nearby screen. The habit can be especially useful for people who have to work on a computer or laptop for long periods.
What problems can continuous screen viewing cause?
Looking at digital screens for long periods can lead to problems such as digital eye strain or computer vision syndrome. Symptoms may include eye fatigue, dryness, irritation, watering, blurred vision and headaches. While looking at screens, people blink less than usual, which can make it difficult to maintain moisture on the surface of the eyes.
However, these symptoms do not always mean a serious eye disease. If the discomfort persists, it is important to get the eyes examined.
Adopt these habits to give the eyes rest
Along with the 20-20-20 rule, some other precautions can also help relax the eyes. Keep the computer screen at about an arm’s length from the eyes and place the top of the screen at eye level or slightly below it. Keep the screen brightness in line with the room lighting and avoid harsh light or reflections falling on the screen.
Blink regularly while working. Avoid direct air from an air conditioner or fan hitting the eyes, as this can increase dryness. Instead of sitting and working continuously for long periods, getting up and walking at intervals is also useful.
Does the 20-20-20 rule protect against all eye diseases?
This rule is mainly useful for reducing eye fatigue and discomfort caused by screens. Following it does not guarantee protection from all eye diseases. One should not depend only on this rule to prevent an increase in spectacle power, eye infections, glaucoma or retina-related problems. If there is persistent eye pain, blurred vision, severe redness or a sudden change in vision, an eye specialist should be contacted immediately. Regular eye examinations are also important, especially for people who already have vision-related problems.
Eye care is important in the digital era
It is not possible to completely stop working on computers and laptops, but small changes in working habits can reduce eye discomfort. Looking about 20 feet away for 20 seconds after every 20 minutes is an easy and practical method. Better eye health can be maintained by making regular breaks, correct screen distance, adequate lighting and timely eye check-ups part of the routine.
