The 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature, among the most prestigious honours in the literary world, will be announced today, October 8. The Swedish Academy will announce the name of the Nobel literature laureate at around 4:30 pm Indian time. The announcement can be watched live through official channels.
Ahead of the announcement, Chinese writer Can Xue is being seen among the leading contenders. Her real name is Deng Xiaohua, and she is known for experimental fiction writing. Can Xue has long remained among the top names in betting markets. However, betting-market projections cannot be treated as an indication of the Nobel Committee’s official decision.
From India, writer Amitav Ghosh’s name is also being discussed among possible contenders. Kolkata-born Ghosh is known for his novels as well as his writing on climate change and the environment. This year, the names of writers of South Asian origin such as Salman Rushdie and Michael Ondaatje are also in discussion.
India has so far received the Nobel Prize in Literature only through Rabindranath Tagore. He received the honour in 1913. According to official Nobel records, from 1901 to 2025, the literature prize was awarded 118 times and there have been a total of 122 laureates.
This time, who the winner will be will be decided only by voting in the Swedish Academy. The Academy does not make the official list of possible names public, and nomination records are kept confidential for 50 years. Therefore, no contender can be considered the winner until the final announcement.
