CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: UPSC Aspirant, 24, Suffers Heart Attack; Sleep Loss, Smoking Raise Risk
New Delhi. Amid rising cases of heart disease among younger people, a worrying case has emerged from Gurugram. A 24-year-old UPSC aspirant suffered a heart attack, and medical tests found severe blockages in two major blood vessels of his heart. Doctors performed angioplasty and placed stents, after which his condition improved.
According to Dr. Sanjay Chiwane, a cardiologist at Fortis Memorial Research Centre, the young man had been preparing for the UPSC examination for several years. During his studies, he slept for only about four hours a day and also smoked. The doctor said such severe coronary artery disease at a young age is unusual, and lifestyle-related risks, along with genetic factors, may have played a role.
Experts say smoking damages the heart and blood vessels and can increase the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure and heart attack. Constant stress and lack of sleep can also adversely affect heart health. However, it is not appropriate to attribute a heart attack in any individual to just one habit. Health experts advise young people to get adequate sleep, avoid smoking, engage in regular physical activity and follow a balanced diet. If symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, excessive sweating or sudden weakness appear, immediate medical help is essential.
