CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Report: 29 percent Indians try rice fix for water-damaged phones

Mobile phones have become an essential part of everyday life. When a phone falls or gets wet, people often try several home remedies to save it. A new report has found that 29 percent of Indians tried to repair a water-damaged phone by placing it in rice. The method has long been used as a household fix.

According to a joint study report by OneAssist and Hansa Research, 82 percent of Indians have dropped their mobile phone at least once, while 72 percent have suffered some kind of accidental damage. After a phone is damaged, many people try to keep it running through home remedies or local repairs instead of replacing it immediately.

The report said that, apart from placing water-damaged phones in rice, 20 to 32 percent of people also used tape or other temporary fixes. However, experts say keeping a wet phone in rice should not be considered a reliable repair method. Keeping a phone switched on or charging it after water has entered can increase damage to internal components.

In such a situation, it is better to switch off the phone immediately and avoid charging it. If screen, battery or charging-port problems appear after water enters the phone, getting it checked at an authorised repair centre is a safer option than trying home experiments.

The report also found that a phone breaking or falling affects people emotionally. Around 35 percent said they felt panic after dropping their phone, while 15 percent cancelled their plans because their phone was damaged.
