New Delhi: Police action against the illegal sale and storage of firecrackers in Delhi is continuing. As part of this campaign, police raided a house in Balbir Nagar in Shahdara district and recovered about 312 kilograms of illegal firecrackers. What stood out was that the large stock of firecrackers had not been kept in a warehouse, but was hidden inside a cupboard and a double bed in the house. Police have arrested 26-year-old Harshit Mittal in the case.
According to police, the Anti-Narcotics Task Force of Shahdara district received a tip-off on November 3 that Harshit, a resident of Balbir Nagar, was illegally selling firecrackers from his home. Acting on the information, a police team raided his house. During the search, a large quantity of firecrackers was found inside a cupboard and a double bed. Police seized a total of 311 kilograms and 970 grams of firecrackers.
The investigation revealed that the accused earlier worked at a restaurant and made a living on daily wages. According to police, financial hardship and the desire to earn quick money led him to start selling illegal firecrackers.
An FIR has been registered at Shahdara police station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Explosives Act. Police are now trying to find out from where the accused procured the firecrackers and to whom he supplied them. His possible associates and sales network are also being investigated.
Police have appealed to people to immediately share information if they learn about illegal storage or sale of firecrackers in residential areas.
