CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The 20th Asian Games are set to begin on Saturday in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. India will field a large contingent of more than 500 athletes across 36 sports this time. A large number of members of the Indian contingent will be taking part in the Asian Games for the first time. According to reports, 314 Indian athletes will make their debut at the continental event.
The Indian contingent includes both male and female athletes. Athletics has the largest representation in the Indian squad, with 79 athletes, while India also has a strong presence in hockey. Fifteen-year-old cricketer Vaibhav Suryavanshi is among the youngest members of the Indian contingent and will also be competing in the Asian Games for the first time.
According to information released by the Sports Ministry, the Indian contingent has a total of 503 members. Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said more than 300 of them are participating in the Asian Games for the first time. This reflects the growing participation of new talent in Indian sports. India won 107 medals at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games. This time too, Indian athletes will compete for medals across various sports. The Asian Games will be held in Japan from September 19 to October 4, 2026.
