CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Vrindavan. Actress and Mathura MP Hema Malini drew the audience’s attention with her dance performance at the age of 78. On Friday, at the inauguration of the Brajraj Utsav held at Swami Haridas Auditorium in Vrindavan, she presented the dance drama “Ganga”.

In the nearly 90-minute presentation, she brought alive the mythological story of Mother Ganga’s descent to earth through dance, music and acting. In a special scene, she descended onto the stage with the help of a crane and portrayed Mother Ganga. From Bhagirath’s penance to the descent of Ganga, Hema Malini performed with more than three dozen artistes.

The dance drama depicted episodes such as King Bhagirath’s penance, his resolve to bring Ganga to earth for the salvation of his ancestors, and Lord Shiva holding Ganga’s forceful stream in his matted locks. Traditional costumes, expressions and music gave the performance a distinctive character.

The dance drama was not limited to mythology alone. It also conveyed a message on the present condition of Ganga and the growing problem of pollution in rivers. The presentation showed the river from its pure flow to its pollution-affected form. The condition of Yamuna was also included in the narrative, along with a message to keep rivers clean and protect natural heritage.

The 11-day Brajraj Utsav began in Vrindavan with Hema Malini’s “Ganga” dance drama. The programme brought together themes of art, spirituality and environmental protection. Hema Malini said that, as a dancer, it was important for her to use cultural presentations to convey the message of cleanliness and conservation of rivers. The performance highlighted Indian mythological tradition as well as present environmental challenges before the audience.
