CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: New Delhi. Discussion continues in the cricket world over the recent form of Indian opener Abhishek Sharma. Former Indian cricketer and commentator Aakash Chopra has reacted to his performance in the five-match T20 International series against West Indies. He said it is not right to expect a player who bats at a strike rate of around 200 to play a big innings in every match. Fluctuations in the performance of a batter who plays aggressive cricket are natural.
‘Expecting big scores every match is our mistake’
Assessing Abhishek’s batting, Aakash Chopra acknowledged that his performance in the series against West Indies was not in line with his ability. However, he also said it is not appropriate to judge a batter on the basis of a few innings. According to him, a player who constantly tries to score at a fast pace also carries the possibility of getting out early.
Chopra also underlined that Abhishek has played several impressive innings with his aggressive batting in previous matches. Therefore, it would be hasty to question his ability on the basis of a few low scores.
How did he perform against West Indies?
In the five-match T20 series against West Indies, Abhishek scored a total of 145 runs at an average of 29. He made 21 runs in the first match, 20 in the second, and 69 off 30 balls in the third match played in Indore. In the fourth match, he could score only 29 off 24 balls, while in the fifth match he was dismissed after making six runs off four balls. His performance in the series did show a lack of consistency, but the 69-run innings in Indore also offered a glimpse of his attacking ability.
The challenge of aggressive batting
In T20 cricket, scoring quickly can give a team an early advantage, but it also carries greater risk. Abhishek Sharma’s batting style is based on this aggressive approach. In such a situation, while assessing his performance, it is important to consider not only the scoring rate but also the match situation, the bowlers’ strategy and the team’s requirements. The main message of Aakash Chopra’s comment is that instead of expecting Abhishek to produce a big innings at a strike rate of 200 every time, his overall performance and contribution to the team should be viewed in perspective.
