CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: Abhijeet Deepke jibes at government over Developed India 2047 UN report
The central government has set a target of making India a developed nation by 2047. Amid this, Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Deepke has taken a swipe at the government over a United Nations (UN) report related to population and food supply. Raising a question on the social media platform X, he wrote, “Is there anything that will be done before 2047?” His comment has come in the context of the Developed India goal and the country’s future food requirements.
India’s population may reach 1.7 billion by 2050: According to the report, India’s population was around 1.4 billion in 2023 and is estimated to rise to 1.7 billion by 2050. To meet the food needs of such a large population, it will be necessary to strengthen agricultural production and the food supply system. The report has also drawn attention to food security challenges in the context of the Developed India target by 2047.
Demand-supply gap feared in several food products: According to estimates in a KPMG report, India’s total foodgrain production is likely to be around 457 million tonnes by 2047-48, while demand is expected to be about 402 million tonnes. Production of rice and wheat is also estimated to remain higher than projected demand. However, a gap has been feared between demand and available supply for products such as nutritious cereals, maize, pulses, fruits, edible oil and milk.
Reforms in agriculture necessary for food security: Estimates indicate that the country will need to increase agricultural production in line with future requirements, improve the food distribution system and focus on nutritional needs. In the case of vegetables, production and demand are also estimated to remain almost equal by 2047-48. In such a situation, along with long-term planning, it will be important to take effective steps in the present to deal with food security challenges. Abhijeet Deepke’s comment, in this context, raises questions over the government’s Developed India goal and the timeline for achieving it.
