Singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya has triggered fresh discussion in the entertainment world by reacting to the lip-syncing controversy linked to Daler Mehndi. Without naming him, he indirectly targeted Daler Mehndi and supported the stand taken by Uttarakhand Cabinet Minister Subodh Uniyal. Abhijeet said clearly that an artist should actually sing during a live show, and merely moving lips to a recorded song amounts to cheating the audience.
During his live programme at the Chhattisgarh Rajyotsav, Abhijeet told the audience that no artist should be allowed to lip-sync in the name of a live show. Referring to a recent incident on stage, he said the minister had said the right thing at the time, but was later made out to be the villain.
Abhijeet promised the audience about his own performance that even if his voice was bad, his throat went hoarse or he went off-key, he would still sing live on stage. He said audiences spend their hard-earned money to listen to artists, and it is necessary to respect their time and trust. He also said he would not cheat audiences by merely moving his lips in the name of singing.
On October 18, during the Maa Kunjapuri Tourism and Development Fair in New Tehri, Uttarakhand, Minister Subodh Uniyal had stopped Daler Mehndi’s performance midway and questioned his singing. The minister alleged lip-syncing and also referred to a payment of Rs 35 lakh for the programme. After this, several artists, including Mika Singh, came out in support of Daler. Abhijeet’s statement has now brought the controversy back into the headlines.
