CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) launched a large-scale agitation in Uttar Pradesh after police baton-charged student protesters at Shri Ramswaroop Memorial University (SRMU) in Barabanki on September 1. The students were opposed to the university’s continued admission to an LLB course that had lost Bar Council of India affiliation, citing irregularities and extortionate fees. The lathi-charge injured over two dozen ABVP workers and students.

The ABVP issued a 48-hour ultimatum demanding: an investigation into the lathi-charge, FIRs against police and university officials, legal action against the “education mafia,” and revocation of SRMU’s degree-granting rights. After the deadline passed, ABVP intensified its protests with torch marches, effigy burning, human chains, and mobilizing over 10 lakh members statewide.

Opposition Minister Om Prakash Rajbhar’s remark calling the students “goons” further triggered ABVP protests, including effigy burning and memorandums demanding apologies.

In response, CM Yogi Adityanath ordered a probe, removed the Barabanki Circle Officer, suspended multiple policemen, and directed the IG and Divisional Commissioner to submit a detailed report. Demolition of university-encroached land by bulldozer was also undertaken following ABVP complaints.
