CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Delhi: New Delhi: A fresh development emerged on Tuesday in the controversy linked to Delhi Police ACP Manasvi Vashisth. In the matter involving an alleged threatening remark against lawyers and a reference to an AK-47, the Delhi High Court refused to take suo motu cognisance. The court asked the lawyers to file a formal petition with the available evidence. It assured them that the matter would be considered after a petition is received.
The matter is linked to the protest held outside Delhi Police Headquarters on Monday, 2 November. ACP Manasvi Vashisth and other police personnel were protesting against their transfers. During the protest, lawyers alleged that some police officers used objectionable words for advocates and issued a threat linked to an AK-47. Citing a video that went viral on social media, the lawyers sought the High Court’s intervention.
On Tuesday, lawyers mentioned the matter before a bench of Acting Chief Justice Nitin Vasudev Sambre and Justice Sanjay Sharma. They requested the court to take suo motu cognisance and initiate action. The bench said the relevant material and allegations should be submitted to the registry in the form of a formal petition. The court made it clear that once the petition is filed, it will be listed and considered.
The controversy began with a clash between police personnel and lawyers at Shahdara police station on 23 October. Advocate Lalit Bansal was seriously injured in the incident. Lawyers subsequently went on strike. On 28 October, ACP Manasvi Vashisth and Inspector Arun Kumar were transferred.
On 2 November, police personnel protested outside the headquarters against the transfers of the two officers. After this, the Ministry of Home Affairs suspended ACP Manasvi Vashisth. Further judicial action in the controversy will now be decided after a formal petition is filed in the High Court.
