CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: Adhikari tells Mamata to rest at home, sparks political row
CNN Central News and Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News / Agencies, Bhopal: Kolkata. The war of words in West Bengal politics between Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has intensified. Taking a swipe at Mamata Banerjee, Shubhendu Adhikari had advised her to remain active only on Facebook and rest at home. Reacting sharply to his statement, Mamata Banerjee alleged that she was being threatened with being prevented from attending public programmes.
“No need to step out on the streets”
According to media reports, Shubhendu Adhikari made the remark at a press conference after Mamata Banerjee’s Facebook Live address. He had said Mamata should remain on Facebook in the afternoon and did not need to step out on the streets. He further said he would make arrangements so that Mamata could not come out on the streets.
The statement came at a time when Mamata Banerjee had raised issues related to financial assistance for women from the BJP government. She had alleged that monthly assistance due to eligible women under the Annapurna scheme was being delayed. The BJP rejected these allegations.
Mamata Banerjee raises strong objection
Reacting to Shubhendu Adhikari’s statement, Mamata Banerjee shared a video on the social media platform X and questioned his words. She asked whether any political leader had the right to decide whether an opposition leader could step out of her home or not.
Linking the remark to democratic rights and political freedom, Mamata also drew the attention of the President and the Chief Justice of India. She alleged that such statements were an attempt to suppress the voice of the opposition.
Dispute began over financial assistance issue
The background to this political confrontation was the issue of financial assistance being given to women under the Annapurna scheme. Mamata Banerjee had referred to complaints of delayed payments to some women and questioned the state government. After this, Shubhendu Adhikari’s remark and Mamata’s response gave the dispute a political turn. The exchange between the two leaders has again brought into discussion the continuing political conflict in West Bengal between the ruling BJP and the opposition Trinamool Congress.
