CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal : AIIMS Bhopal has taken a historic step in advancing cancer treatment by introducing a dedicated thoracic oncology facility within its Department of Surgical Oncology. The initiative was launched under the leadership of AIIMS Bhopal’s Executive Director and nationally renowned oncosurgeon, Prof. Madhwanand Kar.
On this occasion, the team successfully performed its first complex surgery using cutting-edge technology. In the procedure, the cancer-affected portion of the esophagus was removed and replaced with a tube created from a section of the stomach, which was connected up to the throat. The surgery was conducted using thoracoscopic and laparoscopic techniques, thereby avoiding large incisions and enabling faster recovery for the patient.
The challenging operation was carried out by a multidisciplinary team led by Prof. Kar, including Dr. Vinay Kumar (Head of Surgical Oncology), Dr. Ankit, Dr. Vaishali (Chief Anaesthetist), Dr. Zainab, and Dr. Shikha.
The Department of Surgical Oncology at AIIMS Bhopal serves nearly 20,000 cancer patients annually, many of whom travel from Madhya Pradesh and neighboring states. With the introduction of this advanced facility, patients will no longer need to depend solely on major metropolitan cancer centers for such critical surgeries.
Prof. Madhwanand Kar, besides being a distinguished surgeon, has played a pivotal role in medical education and training, guiding multiple AIIMS institutions across the country and mentoring young doctors. He emphasized that advanced thoracic oncology facilities will lead to improved outcomes for patients suffering from esophageal and lung cancers.
Dr. Vinay Kumar, Head of the Department of Surgical Oncology, added, “With Prof. Kar joining, our department has reached new heights. The introduction of thoracoscopic esophagectomy and laparoscopic stomach tube reconstruction is a remarkable gift for patients.”
This landmark initiative by AIIMS Bhopal is a new ray of hope for cancer patients and their families, ensuring world-class cancer surgery and treatment are now available in Central India itself.
