CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The controversy over political slogans and graffiti on university campuses in Delhi is growing. After Jamia Millia Islamia, a case has now come to light of controversial slogans being found written on the walls of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). After slogans such as “Free Umar Khalid” and “Long Live Naxalbari” were seen there, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) raised objections and demanded that those responsible be identified and action be taken.
According to media reports, the university administration has taken cognisance of the matter and started an investigation. The administration said any attempt to disturb peace on the campus and the academic environment would not be tolerated. The identity of those who wrote the slogans has not yet been made public.
ABVP alleged that such activities affect the academic atmosphere of the university. The organisation also alleged that objectionable comments were written near a picture of Veer Savarkar. However, no final conclusion has yet emerged about the people responsible for these activities.
The case in JNU has come at a time when a controversy had erupted after slogans such as “Free Kashmir” and “Free Sharjeel Imam” were found written on the walls of Jamia Millia Islamia. Protests are under way in Jamia over the restoration of student union elections and other student-related demands. During this period, reports of tension between students and university staff also surfaced.
After the controversy, the Jamia administration had decided, as a precautionary measure, to move classes online. The administration condemned the slogans written on the walls, while some protesting students denied any connection with them and demanded an examination of CCTV footage.
These recurring incidents have intensified the debate on university campus politics, freedom of expression, protection of public property and the limits of political activity. Attention will now be on the outcome of the investigations and the next steps by the administration.
