CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Preparations for hosting the 2036 Olympic Games in Ahmedabad are in full swing. The Gujarat Government and the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) are currently drafting a “guarantee document” to present to the International Olympic Committee (IOC). This document will detail the proposed infrastructure and facilities.

As part of these preparations, Ahmedabad Metro has proposed new extensions to connect major Olympic venues. Additionally, Union Home Minister Mr. Amit Shah has confirmed the construction of ten major stadiums in Ahmedabad, marking a significant step toward the Olympic bid.

However, the estimated cost of these plans is around $7.5 billion (₹64,000 crore), which is $2.5 billion more than the estimated cost of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

For a developing country like India, where economic growth is moderate and many sectors experience stagnation, hosting such an expensive event raises serious concerns. Is this investment justified in the context of India’s current economic condition? Is it the right use of resources, especially when there’s a pressing need for improvements in basic infrastructure and public services?

Hosting large sporting events attracts global attention and can lead to significant infrastructure upgrades. However, it’s equally crucial that such investments benefit all sections of society and that these facilities remain functional and useful post-event, rather than becoming neglected and obsolete.

Ultimately, India must consider whether hosting the Olympics will be beneficial in the current economic and social context. Does this investment align with the country’s development goals, or will it increase economic pressure? The answers to these questions are critical for the nation’s future.
