CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: India is testing a new method of space-based computing. Under the ‘In-Orbit AI Lab’, the MOI-1A satellite has been launched on SpaceX’s Falcon-9 rocket. The mission aims to demonstrate that artificial intelligence and edge-computing capabilities can be deployed directly in orbit to analyse data obtained from Earth observation in space itself.

Usually, raw data collected by satellites is sent to Earth-based ground stations for processing. The new technology aims to analyse data within the satellite itself. This could reduce the volume of raw data sent back to Earth and help make useful information available more quickly.

Processing data in orbit could be useful in disaster monitoring, environmental studies, agriculture and other Earth-observation tasks where timely information is important. The MOI-1A experiment is part of an emerging area of space technology in which satellites are being equipped with more capable computing systems.

Combining AI processing in space with Earth-observation capability could help in the development of more autonomous satellite systems. The initiative also highlights the possibilities of edge computing beyond Earth, where data is processed close to the place where it is generated. The mission’s results will be important in assessing the practical potential of AI-based processing in the space environment.
