CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The rapidly growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) has triggered a fresh debate across the world about the future of employment. Its impact is beginning to show particularly on white-collar jobs – professional and knowledge-based work carried out in offices. In areas such as writing, data analysis, customer service, accounting, marketing and software development, AI-based tools are becoming capable of completing many tasks quickly. This has raised the question of whether jobs will disappear in the coming years or whether the way people work will undergo a major change.
Changes in ways of working
AI-based technology is helping prepare documents, summarise information, analyse data and automate routine administrative work. This gives companies an opportunity to complete some tasks in less time. However, it does not mean that the need for employees will end in every profession. In many cases, AI is being used as a tool to improve employee efficiency rather than replace workers.
Which jobs may be affected more?
Jobs linked to routine and repetitive tasks may face greater pressure from automation. These include general customer support, entry-level administrative work, sorting documents and basic data processing. A recent report has also indicated pressure on entry-level jobs in India’s call centre sector because of AI. However, economic conditions and companies’ hiring policies may also be responsible for changes in employment.
India’s changing employment picture
According to recent reporting linked to India’s Chief Economic Adviser, around one-fourth of the country’s workforce is employed in sectors that may be affected by AI. This does not mean that all these people will lose their jobs. In several professions, AI can increase productivity and help employees take up more complex work.
Which skills will be in demand in future?
According to experts, the ability to use AI tools, understand data, solve problems, think creatively, communicate effectively and make decisions will become increasingly important for employment. Companies are likely to continue needing employees who can check the results generated by technology and use them responsibly. Therefore, it would not be correct to view AI only as a technology that takes away jobs. Some tasks and positions may decline, while demand for new skills and roles may increase. Future employment opportunities will also depend on how quickly employees, companies and educational institutions prepare themselves in line with changing technology.
