Concern has grown in the film industry over the security of Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan. During his weekly meeting with fans outside his Mumbai residence, “Jalsa,” Bachchan was this time seen inside a bulletproof glass security enclosure. His son Abhishek Bachchan was also present with him. Following the development, the All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking stronger security for film personalities and their families.
In a letter written on November 3, AICWA president Suresh Shyamlal Gupta said incidents of firing, attacks and extortion threats targeting people associated with the film industry have come to light in recent times. Calling Bachchan’s meeting with fans from behind a bulletproof security enclosure a matter of concern, the organisation said his Sunday tradition, continuing for more than four decades, is now being held amid new security arrangements.
The letter also mentioned the murder of Baba Siddique, firing outside Salman Khan’s house, an attack on Saif Ali Khan, firing outside filmmaker Rohit Shetty’s residence and incidents linked to comedian Kapil Sharma. The organisation also described a recent firing case linked to actor Tiger Shroff as serious.
AICWA urged the Prime Minister to provide strong security to film personalities and their families, take action against alleged gangster and extortion networks, and order an investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). It also appealed for criminal cases to be heard in fast-track courts and for strict punishment for those found guilty. The organisation said strengthening law and order in Mumbai is necessary so that the film industry can work in an atmosphere free from fear.
