CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Under the guidance of Executive Director Ajay Singh, AIIMS Bhopal has once again demonstrated its excellence in medical research, innovation, and healthcare. Recently, a 20-year-old patient was admitted to AIIMS Bhopal with severe breathing difficulties and a rapid heartbeat.

An evaluation by the team of experts from the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) department revealed a mass in the patient’s right atrium and weakness in the right ventricle. Typically, open-heart surgeries involve temporarily stopping the heart, with a heart-lung machine taking over its function. However, in this critical case, stopping the heart would have significantly increased the risks associated with the surgery. It was then decided to proceed with a complex procedure using the pump-assisted beating heart technique to stabilize the heart’s function during the operation.

Highlighting the significance of this achievement, Prof. Singh stated, “This case exemplifies timely intervention and the advanced capabilities of our multidisciplinary team. The expertise of our Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery department enabled us to provide the necessary critical care to this patient.”

The patient’s surgery was successfully performed using the pump-assisted beating heart technique, an advanced method that maintains the heart’s function during the procedure. This technique is particularly crucial for patients with weak cardiac function, leading to improved outcomes and faster recovery.

The surgery was conducted under the supervision of Dr. Yogesh Nivaria, Head of the Cardiothoracic Department. The surgical team included M. Kishan, Surendra Yadav, Rahul Sharma, Vikram Vatti, and Aditya Sirohi. The anesthesia team comprised Nagbhushanam, while the perfusionist team included Sushma and Vedant. Nursing support was provided by Poonam and Hansa.
