This landmark achievement, under the leadership of Executive Director Prof. Ajay Singh, underscores the hospital’s commitment to delivering world-class healthcare services in Central India.
Expressing his pride in this accomplishment, Prof. Singh stated, “This is a proud moment for AIIMS Bhopal, highlighting the dedication and expertise of our anesthesia, nephrology, and urology teams. This successful transplant not only showcases our institution’s capabilities but also establishes a new benchmark for regional healthcare services in handling complex medical procedures.”
Dr. Mahendra Atlani, Head of the Nephrology Department, said, “This successful transplant is a source of relief for the patient and their family and demonstrates AIIMS Bhopal’s competence in handling complex medical procedures. It will inspire more people to consider organ donation, potentially saving many more lives.”
The transplant involved significant contributions from urologists Dr. Devashish Kaushal, Dr. K. Madhavan, Dr. Ketan Mehra, Dr. Nikita Srivastava, and the anesthesia team, including Dr. Vaishali Vendeskar, Dr. Sunaina Tajpal Karna, and Dr. Shikha Jain.
A 42-year-old patient suffering from end-stage kidney disease received the kidney transplant after relying on dialysis and having no matching donor within the family. Following a successful surgery and post-operative recovery, the patient was discharged in a healthy condition, signaling a remarkable recovery. The kidney was donated by a 73-year-old brain-dead male, whose family made the noble decision to donate his organs, giving the patient a second chance at life.
AIIMS Bhopal aims to enhance the availability of cadaveric organs to address organ shortages and provide lifesaving solutions to patients in need. This success will serve as a beacon of hope for other patients and pave the way for the future development of AIIMS Bhopal’s kidney transplant program.
