CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal : AIIMS Bhopal has completed a historic and comprehensive oral health survey in Madhya Pradesh, which has revealed the true state of dental and oral diseases in the state. The findings have been published in the World Health Organization’s South-East Asia Journal of Public Health.
Madhya Pradesh, with a population of over 75 million, has long faced serious oral health challenges. The last major survey was conducted in 2002–03. To fill this gap, the Department of Dentistry and the Regional Training Centre for Oral Health Promotion and Dental Public Health at AIIMS Bhopal, in collaboration with the Directorate of Health Services, Government of Madhya Pradesh, carried out this study.
The survey covered nearly 48,000 people across 41 districts, including all age groups from children to the elderly. Results showed that 40–70% suffer from dental caries, 50–87% from gum disease, and 2–17% from pre-cancerous oral conditions. Notably, more than 70% of elderly people and nearly half of young children were found to be affected by cavities.
Based on this survey, AIIMS Bhopal has created India’s first Oral Health Data Bank, modeled on the World Health Organization framework. This will provide district-level insights into oral health services and help the government design more effective health programs. To ensure accuracy, mobile apps and GPS technology were used in data collection.
Through the Regional Training Centre, AIIMS Bhopal is also training doctors, teachers, and counselors to extend oral health services to the community. This initiative will not only aid in disease prevention but also bring a new direction to the state’s healthcare landscape.
