Under the leadership of Prof. (Dr.) Ajay Singh, Executive Director of AIIMS Bhopal, the institution has taken significant strides in the fields of research and medicine. Under his guidance, Dr. Varun Malhotra and his team were honored with the International Best Researcher Award for their study on heart rate variability.

This research, conducted with Tanuja Pathak, Dr. Danish Javed, Dr. Santosh Laxman Wakode, Dr. Avinash Thakre, Dr. Sunil Chauhan, and Dr. F. Sidral, is titled “Comparative Analysis of Heart Rate Variability Parameters Between Surya Namaskar and Stationary Bicycle Exercise Groups.” This award recognizes AIIMS Bhopal’s significant contributions in the fields of physiology and mind-body medicine. The award was presented at the International Science, Technology, and Research Awards Congress 2024.

Prof. Singh congratulated the team for receiving the International Best Researcher Award for their groundbreaking research. He said, “This honor serves as a symbol of our institution’s continuous excellence in the academic and research fields.” The study was published in the prestigious International Journal of Yoga, where the heart rate variability (HRV) parameters between Surya Namaskar (SN) and stationary cycling exercise (SCE) were compared.

Key findings of the study revealed that Surya Namaskar showed significant improvements in heart rate variability, which increased activities related to relaxation and recovery in the body, leading to better heart health. On the other hand, stationary cycling provided general exercise benefits but temporarily increased activities associated with stress and physical exertion.

This study proves that incorporating yoga practices like Surya Namaskar into daily life can improve both physical and mental health, while also balancing the autonomic nervous system. The research also shows that Surya Namaskar is an effective way to improve heart health and reduce stress, benefiting people of all ages.

The award was presented by Shri Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, Education Minister of Tamil Nadu, where international experts praised the research team’s work.
