CNN Central News and Network–ITDC India ePress / ITDC News Bhopal: AIIMS Bhopal successfully conducted its annual one-day training program on melioidosis awareness and clinical management. This marked the third consecutive year of this significant educational initiative, aimed at raising awareness among healthcare professionals and clinical microbiologists about the prevalence of this infectious disease in Madhya Pradesh.
Highlighting the importance of the program,
Professor Ajay Singh, Executive Director of AIIMS Bhopal, stated:
“Our continuous effort is to equip healthcare professionals with critical knowledge that can save lives. Although melioidosis is underreported, consistent training is a step toward controlling it.”
Melioidosis, caused by the bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei, poses a significant health threat, particularly in rural areas where agricultural workers are most at risk. Previously unrecognized in Madhya Pradesh, melioidosis cases have been identified by the Microbiology Department of AIIMS Bhopal over the past three years.
Considering the high mortality rate associated with this disease, AIIMS Bhopal organized this training program to bridge the knowledge gap among doctors and researchers and to promote effective management strategies.

The program saw participation from esteemed clinical faculty and microbiologists from major government and private hospitals across Madhya Pradesh, including AIIMS Mangalagiri, Military Hospital Bhopal, ICMR-BMHRC Bhopal, GEMS Srikakulam, SRVS Medical College Shivpuri, SVN GMC Yavatmal, and AIIMS Nagpur.
This training program was conducted under the Melioidosis Research Project of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). The project is led by Dr. Ayush Gupta, Associate Professor, Department of Microbiology, AIIMS Bhopal.
Key Achievement:
A laboratory manual for the diagnosis of melioidosis was also released during the event, which will assist clinicians and microbiologists in the identification and management of this infectious disease.
Impact and Conclusion:
This annual training program has played a pivotal role in raising awareness, improving diagnostic and treatment approaches, and equipping medical professionals with the necessary knowledge and resources. The initiative aims to contribute significantly to the early detection and effective management of melioidosis.
