CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Under the guidance of Executive Director Ajay Singh, AIIMS Bhopal has once again demonstrated its excellence in medical research, innovation, and healthcare. Recently, the institute achieved a historic milestone in pediatric blood cancer treatment by successfully performing a haplo-identical bone marrow transplant on a seven-year-old girl suffering from relapsed acute lymphoblastic leukemia (pediatric blood cancer).

This complex procedure was conducted a month ago under the leadership of Dr. Gaurav Dhingra and Dr. Sachin Bansal from the Department of Medical Oncology and Hematology. The child’s treatment was supervised by Dr. Narendra Chaudhary from the Pediatric Oncology Department. The patient’s brother, who was a half-match in Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA), was selected as the donor for the transplant.

The patient underwent a myeloablative conditioning regimen, including total body irradiation, successfully administered by Dr. Saikat Das, Dr. Vipin Kharade, and physicist (RSO) Avneesh Mishra from the Radiation Oncology Department. This accomplishment marks AIIMS Bhopal as the second AIIMS after AIIMS Delhi to provide such advanced bone marrow transplant facilities for pediatric blood cancer.

Executive Director Singh lauded the achievement, stating, “This success is a testament to AIIMS Bhopal’s dedication and advanced medical services. Successfully completing complex procedures like haplo-identical bone marrow transplants reflects the expertise and commitment of our team. This milestone establishes AIIMS Bhopal as a pioneer in pediatric blood cancer treatment.” He wished the patient a speedy recovery and emphasized the importance of regular follow-ups.
