CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: AIIMS Bhopal Conducts Research on Early and Accurate Detection of Prostate Cancer
Under the guidance of AIIMS Bhopal Executive Director, Prof. Ajay Singh, the institute is conducting a groundbreaking research study aimed at improving the early and accurate detection of prostate cancer.
The study, titled “Diagnosis of Different Stages of Prostate Cancer Using PCA3: A Central India-Based Pilot Study,” is being led by Director Debprosit Karmakar, with expert supervision from Director Sukhes Mukherjee (Department of Biochemistry) and Director Ketan Mehra (Department of Urology).
Prostate Cancer: A Global Concern
Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among men worldwide and ranks sixth in India. Early detection plays a crucial role in successful treatment and recovery. Currently, doctors use the Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) test for screening. However, PSA levels can rise due to non-cancerous conditions like infection or prostate gland enlargement, leading to unnecessary biopsies and mental distress for patients.
To address this issue, AIIMS Bhopal is evaluating a more precise diagnostic marker, Prostate Cancer Antigen 3 (PCA3). Unlike PSA, PCA3 is specifically associated with prostate cancer and can be detected through a urine test, making it a non-invasive and more reliable screening method.
PCA3: A More Accurate and Non-Invasive Screening Test
Research indicates that PCA3 can help reduce unnecessary biopsies and improve the understanding of cancer severity. The research team at AIIMS Bhopal is comparing PCA3 with the traditional PSA test to determine which screening method is more effective for Indian patients.
If successful, this study could revolutionize prostate cancer screening and treatment in India, benefiting thousands of men by enabling early and precise diagnosis.
Expert Opinions on the Study
Speaking about this landmark research, Prof. Ajay Singh stated:
“Early and accurate diagnosis of prostate cancer can save countless lives. This research is a critical step toward improving cancer screening methods in India.”
The findings of this study could help develop better diagnostic protocols, reducing unnecessary biopsies and medical interventions.
AIIMS Bhopal’s research team remains committed to innovation in cancer diagnostics and enhancing patient care across India.
