CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: AIIMS Bhopal Shines at International Urology Conference: Recognition for Prostate Cancer Research
Under the leadership of Executive Director Prof. Ajay Singh, AIIMS Bhopal brought pride to India at the Sri Lankan Association of Urological Surgeons (SLUS) Silver Jubilee International Conference held in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Udit Khurana, a resident from AIIMS Bhopal’s Urology Department, presented his research on prostate cancer treatment and secured second place in the podium presentations. This research was conducted under the supervision of Dr. K. Madhavan and guided by Devashish Kaushal, Head of the Urology Department. Faculty members Dr. Ketan Mehra and Dr. Nikita Srivastava congratulated Khurana on this remarkable achievement.
Expressing his delight, Prof. Singh said, “This accomplishment reflects the talent, dedication, and spirit of innovation within the AIIMS Bhopal team. The research on prostate cancer treatment not only advances medical science but also ensures better patient care. This international recognition is not only a proud moment for our institution but also highlights India’s growing reputation in the global medical community.”
The study focused on the use of radical prostatectomy (surgical removal of the prostate gland) in treating locally advanced and oligometastatic types of prostate cancer. Traditionally, prostate cancer that spreads beyond the prostate is managed with medications or radiation. However, AIIMS Bhopal’s research suggests that radical prostatectomy, when used in select patients, can achieve better disease control even when the cancer has slightly spread outside the prostate. This approach is particularly beneficial for patients with limited (oligometastatic) cancer spread, as surgery can help manage cancer more effectively and slow its progression.
By offering a potentially more effective treatment, this approach could reduce the long-term costs and burdens associated with prolonged cancer therapy, benefiting both patients and the healthcare system.
The recognition at the SLUS conference marks a proud moment for AIIMS Bhopal and India. The findings of this study could pave the way for new treatment guidelines and benefit patients not only in India but across the globe.
