At the pre-conference workshop of APICON 2024, AIIMS Bhopal showcased its commitment to promoting holistic healthcare through a session titled “Integrating Mind-Body Medicine: A Scientific Exploration Through Meditation and Mindfulness.” The workshop, held at ESIC College, Chennai, featured notable participants, including AIIMS Bhopal’s Additional Professor and team leader Varun Malhotra, AIIMS Madurai Director Senthil Kumar, AIIMS Delhi Director Raj Kumar Yadav, and SMIMS Director Suprabha Sharma.
Participants were introduced to mindfulness practices aimed at enhancing mental clarity, peace, and inner balance. Key highlights included a guided meditation session featuring chair yoga, pranayama, chanting, deep breathing, and visualization techniques. Additionally, the Heartfulness workshop focused on spiritual growth and inner transformation through pranahuti (transmission) meditation.
Speaking on the workshop’s significance, Director Singh stated, “AIIMS Bhopal is committed to shaping the future of medical education by bridging traditional wisdom with modern science. Yoga and mind-body medicine are not merely therapeutic tools but transformative practices redefining healthcare and education.”
This session inspired participants to embrace the “Yoga Addiction World,” a transformative journey connecting physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. The workshop emphasized incorporating yoga and mind-body medicine into mainstream medical curricula.
Discussions included the National Medical Commission’s (NMC) mandate to make yoga compulsory for undergraduate students across India and proposals to include yoga in MD Physiology programs, such as two-week optional postings in pre-clinical departments. The workshop positioned yoga as an integral part of medical education, describing it as a process of “self-refinement and self-purification.”
