Politics in Uttar Pradesh has heated up over remarks made by Dhirendra Krishna Shastri, the head of Bageshwar Dham, concerning Lord Shri Krishna and Lord Shri Ram. Samajwadi Party national president Akhilesh Yadav has targeted the BJP over its silence on the issue. He asked why the BJP, which describes itself as a protector of Sanatan Dharma, is not responding openly in the matter.
The controversy began with Shastri’s statement in which he commented while comparing the postures of Lord Shri Ram and Lord Shri Krishna. After the video surfaced, several people raised objections. As the controversy grew, Shastri issued a clarification, saying his intention was not to insult any deity. He also apologised if sentiments had been hurt.
Akhilesh Yadav gave the issue a political turn and appealed to organisers of religious events not to give a platform to religious narrators who make controversial statements. He warned that such remarks could create discontent and division in society.
From the point of view of political analysis, the controversy is being considered significant ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. Akhilesh Yadav appears to be trying to corner the BJP on issues of Sanatan and religious faith while strengthening his political hold among the Yadav community and other backward classes. At the same time, all eyes are also on the BJP’s response and its strategy on the issue.
