CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: Akhilesh’s triple strategy behind SP win, candidate choices changed equations
Lucknow. The Samajwadi Party’s (SP) performance in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council election has triggered a fresh discussion in state politics. Key aspects of party president Akhilesh Yadav’s strategy included candidate selection, managing social equations and keeping a continuous watch on the electoral process. In the election for 11 seats, the SP registered wins on several seats and challenged the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
First gambit: changes in candidate selection. Ahead of the election, the SP changed its candidates on some seats and gave tickets to leaders who were dissatisfied with the BJP after bringing them into the party. The decision to field Akash Agarwal in the Agra region and Dr. Sanjayan Tripathi in the Gorakhpur-Faizabad teachers’ constituency was part of this strategy. The party tried to strengthen its equations by keeping local political conditions and the identity of candidates in mind.
The PDA formula, linking backward classes, Dalits and minorities, has been central to Akhilesh Yadav’s politics. The party’s strategy emphasised increasing organisational contact and support among these sections. Local issues and direct engagement with voters in teachers’ and graduates’ constituencies also influenced the contests. However, to treat any one strategy as the sole reason for victory, an analysis of data from different regions would be necessary.
Third gambit: watch on counting and instructions to workers. During counting, Akhilesh Yadav demanded transparency in the electoral process and raised questions over the result in Varanasi. He also alleged pressure on officials and delay in the result, claims that have not been independently confirmed. At the same time, he appealed to winning candidates and workers to share the success peacefully.
Important signals before the 2027 Assembly election. The Legislative Council election result has carried a political message for both major parties ahead of the coming Assembly election. For the SP, it is an opportunity to review its organisation, candidate selection and social alliances, while the BJP too may consider its strategy on the basis of the results. However, it would not be appropriate to treat Legislative Council election results as a direct indicator of possible Assembly election outcomes, because the voters and electoral circumstances in the two elections are different.
