Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara criticised Israel’s military action during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly and reiterated Syria’s claim over the Golan Heights. He said the Golan region is part of Syria and that Syria would not accept any attempt to change its status.
In his address, al-Shara claimed that since he came to power, Israel had carried out around 500 air and artillery strikes in Syria, more than 1,200 ground incursions and detained about 300 people. He said such actions were affecting Syria’s security and stability. These figures are al-Shara’s own claims.
On the Golan Heights, al-Shara made it clear that Syria would not step back from its claim. Citing United Nations Security Council resolutions and international law, he said the Golan would remain Syrian territory. The United Nations regards the Golan Heights as Syrian territory under Israeli control. Israel captured the area in the 1967 war and declared its annexation in 1981.
However, al-Shara did not rule out the possibility of peace with Israel in the future. He said a peaceful agreement was possible that would protect the rights of all sides. He also reiterated the demand for compliance with the 1974 Israel-Syria disengagement agreement and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from designated areas.
Responding to al-Shara’s statement, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said the Golan Heights would remain part of Israel’s sovereignty. The exchange at the United Nations has once again brought to the fore the differences between the two countries over the status of the Golan.
