CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Chennai. The hearing in the Madras High Court on the bypoll to Tamil Nadu’s Ambasamudram Assembly seat has been completed. The court has reserved its order on a public interest petition filed against holding bypolls in five Assembly constituencies. Apart from Ambasamudram, the seats include Tiruchi East, Perundurai, Viralimalai and Karur.
The matter was heard by a bench of Chief Justice Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari and Justice G. Arul Murugan. The petition sought that bypolls should not be held in the constituencies concerned until the pending election petitions related to them are disposed of. The court has already imposed an interim stay on issuing the bypoll notification for these seats.
The election of Esakki Subbiah from the Ambasamudram seat has also been challenged in court. On October 2, the High Court rejected an application filed on his behalf seeking dismissal of the election petition. The court said the allegations made in the petition should be examined during the hearing.
The Election Commission has told the court that bypolls can be held after the pending election petitions are disposed of and that the bypolls have not been permanently deferred. For now, the progress of the bypoll process in Ambasamudram awaits the court’s final order.
