After the accident, instead of stopping the vehicle, the ambulance driver allegedly ran over both of them and fled the spot. The entire incident was captured on a CCTV camera installed near the scene.
The deceased has been identified as 40-year-old Ashish Kumar Srivastava. He was a resident of Puri Tola Hathi Kuan in Wazirganj. Ashish worked with his neighbour Vedant Srivastava at a private pharmaceutical company in Transport Nagar, Sarojininagar. On Monday morning, both were going to duty on a scooter as usual. Ashish was riding the scooter and Vedant was seated behind him.
According to police, near parking number 9 in Transport Nagar, a motorcyclist came from the front on the wrong side. To avoid him, Ashish suddenly applied the brakes. At the same time, a speeding private hospital ambulance coming from behind hit the scooter. Both fell on the road due to the impact. It is alleged that the driver did not stop the ambulance and fled after running over Ashish.
With the help of passers-by, both were taken to Lokbandhu Hospital, where doctors declared Ashish dead. Vedant also suffered injuries. Ashish is survived by his wife Richa and an eight-year-old son.
Sarojininagar police have sent the body for post-mortem examination. Police are trying to identify and trace the absconding ambulance and driver on the basis of CCTV footage. A written complaint in the case is still awaited.
