CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: Amethi. A case of a serious error in a disability certificate has come to light in Amethi district of Uttar Pradesh. In the Unique Disability ID (UDID) card of Vinod Kumar Dwivedi, an elderly man with a disability affecting his legs, the category entered is not his actual disability but low vision, or reduced eyesight.

The elderly man has been making rounds of government offices for the past five years to get the mistake corrected, but his problem has not been resolved so far.

Instead of a tricycle, he is getting a cane meant for eye-related disability. The case is from the Jamo police station area of Amethi. Vinod Kumar Dwivedi says that because the wrong disability category is recorded on the card, he is unable to get government facilities according to his needs. He needs equipment such as a tricycle for mobility support, but allegedly, because of the wrong record, he is given a cane used for eye-related problems.

Vinod’s neighbour Dev Narayan also said the elderly man has been affected by disability in his legs since childhood. Despite this, an eye-related problem is recorded on his card. Because of this discrepancy, he is facing difficulty in getting the necessary assistive equipment.

After the matter came to light, Amethi Chief Medical Officer Dr. Anshuman Singh said such problems are arising due to technical issues in the UDID portal. He said work is under way to remove the portal’s shortcomings. According to the CMO, Vinod Dwivedi’s case had not yet come to his notice, but efforts would be made to resolve it once information is received.

The UDID card is an important document for the identification of persons with disabilities and for availing benefits under government schemes. Incorrect information in it can obstruct the person concerned from receiving necessary facilities.

Vinod Kumar Dwivedi has demanded that his certificate be corrected according to his actual disability, so that he can get assistive equipment and other eligible facilities as per his needs. It remains to be seen how quickly the department concerned corrects the matter and whether the elderly man gets relief.
