Amit Shah Orders Border Demography Study
CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has directed a high-level committee on demographic change to conduct a detailed study of India’s border districts, emphasizing the need to assess demographic trends and their potential implications for national security, border management, and social stability. The directive comes as the Centre intensifies its focus on issues related to illegal immigration, population shifts, and changing settlement patterns in sensitive frontier regions.
During a review meeting, Shah reportedly stated that demographic changes in border areas directly affect the security of the nation and its frontiers. The committee has been tasked with examining the causes behind population changes, including illegal infiltration, cross-border activities, economic migration, and other factors that may influence demographic patterns.
The high-level panel, constituted by the Central Government, is headed by retired Justice Prakash Prabhakar Navlekar and includes experts from administration, security, and public policy. Its mandate includes analyzing abnormal demographic trends, recommending policy measures, strengthening border management systems, and proposing mechanisms for identifying and addressing illegal immigration.
The study is expected to focus particularly on districts located along international borders, where demographic changes can have strategic implications. The committee will submit its findings and recommendations to the government within a stipulated timeframe, helping shape future policies on border security, population management, and national integration.
