CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Political and social reactions have intensified after Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). Varanasi’s Shahar-e-Mufti, Maulana Abdul Batin Nomani, has opposed the government’s position on the UCC. He said objections on the issue had already been made clear by the religious and social leadership of the Muslim community.
Amit Shah had said in a statement in Mumbai that the UCC would be implemented in 21 NDA-ruled states before 2029. Responding to the statement, Maulana Abdul Batin Nomani said that if the government has the power, it can get anything implemented, but that does not necessarily mean the community concerned will accept it. He said the Muslim community would decide its position according to whatever decision its leadership takes on the issue.
The objective of the UCC is to implement a common legal framework for personal laws such as marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption for all citizens in the country. Supporters link it with equality and uniformity, while opponents view it in terms of religious freedom and personal laws.
In Varanasi, Congress leader Raghavendra Choubey also targeted the government, alleging that an attempt was being made to divide society by raising the UCC issue before elections.
