CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Experts from Lucknow University held deliberations at the ONGC Centre on the university campus on the environmental and climate crisis in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The discussion, organised by the Department of Geology, focused on effective measures for the conservation of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the context of environmental changes caused by climate change, the increasing frequency of natural disasters, depletion of natural resources, impacts on biodiversity, food resources and forest wealth, and changes in sea level. The meeting was attended by the Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Dinesh Sharma, and Lucknow University Vice-Chancellor J. P. Saini. It was hosted by Dhruv Sen Singh, Senior Professor and Programme Coordinator, Department of Geology.
The experts present on the occasion included J. P. Saini, Vice-Chancellor, Lucknow University; Amita Kanaujia, Head, Department of Zoology, and Director, Institute of Wildlife Sciences; Dhruv Sen Singh, Senior Professor and Programme Coordinator, Department of Geology, and Director, Institute of Hydrocarbon, Energy and Geo-Resources; Vineet Verma, Superintendent, Construction Department; Puneet Mishra, Director, Institute for Development of Advanced Computing; Monisha Banerjee, Director, Institute of Advanced Molecular Genetics and Infectious Diseases; C. R. Gautam, Director, Institute of Food Processing and Technology, ONGC Building; and Manoj Kumar Yadav, Assistant, Department of Geology. Detailed discussions were held on balancing development with environmental protection and addressing local challenges through scientific and technological solutions, with the objective of ensuring sustainable development of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, environmental protection, biodiversity conservation and minimising the impacts of climate change.
Emphasis was also placed on preparing a long-term action plan through coordination among various fields such as geology, water resources, biodiversity, food technology, advanced computing and mathematical modelling, along with effective, energy-efficient and environment-friendly technologies for desalination of seawater. Lieutenant Governor Dinesh Sharma appreciated all the suggestions and said Lucknow University’s multidisciplinary expertise would play a decisive role in making the islands a model of climate-resilient and sustainable development.
