CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Anne Carson wins 2026 literature Nobel; Amitav Ghosh misses out

The Nobel Prize in Literature for 2026 has been announced. Canadian writer, poet and translator Anne Carson has been awarded the prestigious honour for her innovative literary contribution. Praising her writing, the Swedish Academy said her works have developed new forms for contemporary literature while engaging in a creative dialogue with the classical literary tradition.

Amitav Ghosh was also in discussion. The name of celebrated Indian-origin writer Amitav Ghosh had figured among the possible contenders before the announcement of the prize. However, he was not chosen as the winner in the official Nobel announcement. Ghosh is internationally recognised for his novels and for his writing on subjects such as climate change, history and colonialism.

India still awaits its second literature Nobel. Rabindranath Tagore remains the first and so far the only Indian to have won the Nobel Prize in Literature, receiving the honour in 1913. After the 2026 prize went to Anne Carson, the Indian literary world will continue to look to the future for a possible achievement by an Indian writer.
