After Marathi film “Gondhal” was chosen as India’s official entry for the 99th Academy Awards, debate over the selection has intensified. Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap questioned India’s Oscar selection process, saying the country often chooses the wrong films. He also cited examples such as “The Lunchbox” and “All We Imagine as Light”.
Anurag Kashyap also clarified that he has not yet watched “Gondhal”. According to him, factors such as international recognition, screenings at film festivals and distribution in the United States should also be considered for a film selected for the Oscars. He said “Gondhal” should first have been shown at international film festivals.
Responding to Anurag’s remarks, “Gondhal” director Santosh Davakhar said he respects Anurag Kashyap and his work. According to Davakhar, he had told Anurag about the film on a flight from Bengaluru to Mumbai on April 26. At the time, Anurag had said he would watch the film.
Davakhar said that after this, the film did not become publicly available and there was no screening in Mumbai either. He appealed to viewers not to form an opinion about the film without watching it. He said “Gondhal” is a psychological thriller that attempts to take Marathi culture and traditions to international audiences. The film will represent India in the Best International Feature Film category at the 2027 Oscars.
