CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Apple Pay prepares for India launch with Axis Bank support
Apple is preparing to launch its digital payment service Apple Pay in India. According to a Reuters report, the company could start the service next month, in October 2026, with Axis Bank credit cards supported in the initial phase. However, Apple and Axis Bank have not officially confirmed the report.
Through Apple Pay, iPhone users will be able to make contactless, tap-and-pay transactions by securely storing tokenised card information on their devices. Face ID, Touch ID or a passcode can be used for payments. After beginning in India with one bank, the company is working on plans to gradually add other banks.
According to the report, Apple is also in talks with HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank, but final agreement on commercial terms has not yet been reached with the two banks. Apple Pay is initially expected to focus on card payments. Reports vary on whether UPI will be included in the initial launch.
Apple Pay’s entry into India comes at a time when the country’s digital payments market is expanding rapidly and UPI dominates the segment. According to Reuters, UPI accounts for around 84 percent of total digital payment volumes in India. The launch of Apple Pay in India would give the company an opportunity to create a new space in this large digital payments market.
