CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Delhi: New Delhi, October 21: The Defence Ministry signed a contract worth about Rs 770 crore with Bharat Electronics Limited on Wednesday to buy improved low-level lightweight radars for the Indian Army. Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh attended the signing in New Delhi.
The ministry said the LLLR-I system can detect and track fighter-sized aircraft as well as mini and micro drones. It can also prioritise aerial targets, supporting the Army's response to unmanned aircraft threats.
The order places domestic radar manufacturing at the centre of this air-defence upgrade. The ministry described the procurement as a step towards greater indigenisation, with a role for India's defence manufacturing ecosystem and smaller enterprises.
The announcement identifies the contract value and the system's intended capabilities; it does not specify the number of radars or a delivery timetable.
The agreement was announced by the Defence Ministry on October 21.
