CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Delhi: Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) MP Arvind Sawant has made a controversial statement about Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. He alleged that Gyanesh Kumar is only a representative and that some other force is working behind him. Calling him a puppet, Sawant said someone else was pulling his strings. The remarks came after the INDIA alliance rally held at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi.
Describing the rally as historic, Sawant said he had not seen such a large crowd at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan in the past 25 to 30 years. He said that after leaving Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence at 12 noon, he reached Ramlila Maidan at around 3 pm. Traffic movement was affected on the way because of the crowd.
The MP also questioned the functioning of Delhi Police. He alleged that some youths were detained during the protest and that police also behaved improperly with social activist Tushar Gandhi. Sawant appealed to police personnel to uphold the dignity of the uniform and not work under anyone’s pressure. He said the Constitution gives all citizens the right to freedom of expression.
Sawant’s remarks have come amid allegations being made by the opposition over the Election Commission and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. Responses from the Election Commission and the parties concerned to these allegations are also being viewed in the context of this controversy.
