CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal : Democracy has existed in our country since the Vedic period. It is ingrained in our very soul. This is why our identity cannot be erased. Whether it is the Lok Sabha or state assemblies, the role of the Speaker is extremely important in a democracy. The Speaker satisfies the members of the house through words, reasoning, and conduct. The Speaker symbolizes not power, but dignity, balance, coordination, and justice. The ruling and opposition parties complement each other. In a democracy, the Speaker’s seat is accountable to everyone. Assemblies play a vital role in strengthening India’s democracy.

These remarks were made by Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly Speaker Narendra Singh Tomar during a masterclass at MCU, where he addressed students as the chief speaker. He spoke on the topic “The Speaker’s Chair” during this special university event.

At the beginning of his address, Mr. Tomar paid tribute to Makhanlal Chaturvedi and stated that no matter which field we work in today, the foundations of democracy and the sacrifices of our great ancestors must always remain in our minds. It is due to the struggles and sacrifices of heroes in the freedom movement that we are able to breathe in an independent society today. Every citizen has the responsibility to remember the values of democracy and the sacrifices made for it. The more aware the citizens are, the better the political system will be. We must preserve this freedom intact. Assemblies discuss development, which benefits the people of the region. The role of a legislator in the assembly is essential, but it will be effective only when legislators understand the rules, procedures, and issues properly and raise them in the house.

In his address, Mr. Tomar also discussed the innovations being implemented in the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly. He mentioned that a special day has been allocated for female legislators to ask questions and get more time to ensure their voices are heard. He also highlighted efforts to digitize the records of the Assembly library and make them available online soon.

On this occasion, he told the students that the traditions of democracy will continue only with everyone’s cooperation. Every step we take, every word we speak, and every action we perform should align with the dreams of freedom fighters. In response to a question, he added that live streaming of assembly proceedings is also being considered. He emphasized that study and learning are very important for students and aspiring journalists.

At the beginning of the program, while explaining the objectives of the masterclass specially organized for students, Vice-Chancellor Vijay Manohar Tiwari said that the main purpose of the event is to familiarize students with experts from various fields beyond journalism and provide them knowledge on important social issues. He stated that the masterclass by the Assembly Speaker was organized to introduce students to political reporting, assembly proceedings, and the role of the Speaker. He also advised students that for sustainable success, coordination of multiple skills is essential.

On this occasion, experimental newspapers published by students of the Media Management Department were also released by the Assembly Speaker and the Vice-Chancellor. The program was conducted by Head of the Department of Mass Communication, Professor Sanjay Dwivedi. At the conclusion, the University Registrar, Professor P. Shashikala, expressed gratitude to the chief guest and other dignitaries present. Students and faculty members from all departments attended the event.
