CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: In the special camp organized for oral cancer screening, 1832 people have been screened using an autofluorescence-based device. Among them, early signs of oral cancer were found in 361 individuals. To accommodate more patients, the duration of this special camp has been extended by 15 days. The screening is being conducted free of charge in the NCD room in Block A of the district hospital.

Through oral scan tests, oral cancer can be diagnosed at an early stage, preventing the disfigurement and other complications that occur due to delayed diagnosis. The screenings are conducted daily by dental specialists. The risk of oral cancer is significantly higher in those who use tobacco products such as gutkha, khaini, zarda, bidi, and cigarettes, so it is essential for individuals with these habits to undergo regular screenings.

Dr. Prabhakar Tiwari, Chief Medical and Health Officer of Bhopal, mentioned that follow-up is being conducted for individuals found with early symptoms of oral cancer during the camp. Under the Non-Communicable Disease Control Program, cancer screening and treatment facilities are provided free of charge.

Symptoms of oral cancer may include white or red patches or sores in the mouth, hardening of skin in any part of the mouth, difficulty in chewing, swallowing, or speaking, difficulty in opening the mouth, and changes in voice. Oral cancer can affect any part of the mouth, including the gums, tongue, inner cheeks, or lips. Tobacco use poses a risk for various types of cancer, as nicotine in tobacco acts as a poison in the body. Therefore, it is in the best interest of people to avoid tobacco and tobacco products and to prevent children and adolescents from starting their use. Any doubts or symptoms should prompt immediate medical examination.
