CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: After a pacemaker is implanted, it may take some time for a patient to return to normal life. Certain precautions are especially important in the initial weeks, as the pacemaker and the wires connected to it need time to settle properly inside the body. Activities should be increased gradually as advised by the doctor.
After pacemaker implantation, patients should avoid lifting heavy objects, straining, pushing and pulling for some time. In the first few weeks, they are also advised to avoid raising the arm on the side where the pacemaker has been implanted above shoulder level. However, instead of keeping the arm completely still, it may be necessary to do light exercises as instructed by the physician.
Special care should also be taken to keep the wound clean. If symptoms such as redness, increasing swelling, severe pain, warmth, or fluid or pus discharge from the wound appear, medical advice should be sought immediately. It is also important to visit the pacemaker clinic or cardiologist for regular check-ups.
Patients should always carry their pacemaker identification card and inform any doctor or dentist about it before treatment. Avoid keeping a mobile phone in a shirt pocket directly over the pacemaker, and do not bring strong magnetic devices close to the device. Before any test or treatment involving magnetic fields, such as an MRI, the doctor must be informed about the pacemaker.
After pacemaker implantation, it is also not advisable to stop or change medicines on one’s own. The timing for driving, exercise and returning to work depends on the patient’s condition and the doctor’s advice. Therefore, it is most important to give priority to the individual instructions provided by the hospital.
