CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: An awareness and counseling session was organized by the Department of Pediatrics at AIIMS Bhopal under the leadership of Executive Director Dr. Ajay Singh on the occasion of International Thalassemia Day. The event, held in the Pediatric OPD complex, was conducted in collaboration with the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP), and witnessed participation from numerous individuals, including parents of children affected by thalassemia.
The theme for 2025, “Empowering Lives, Connecting Communities: Prioritizing Patients in Thalassemia”, highlighted the importance of community solidarity in the fight against the disease.
DM Resident Dr. Anurag Mohanty explained that thalassemia symptoms do not appear immediately after birth but typically become evident between 6 months and 2 years of age. Prof. Girish Bhatt emphasized the importance of regular blood transfusions and iron-reducing medications.
MPIAP President Mahesh Maheshwari pointed out the need to focus on hormonal and developmental issues in thalassemia patients. Dr. Narendra Choudhary underlined the significance of treatments such as bone marrow transplants.
Head of the Pediatrics Department, Dr. Shikha Malik, stressed the importance of thalassemia screening before marriage, while Dr. Pooja Soni explained the process of prenatal screening for the disease. Concluding the event, Prof. Ajay Singh stated that awareness and timely intervention are the most powerful tools in combating thalassemia.
