CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: Senior Samajwadi Party leader and former Uttar Pradesh cabinet minister Azam Khan and his son Abdullah Azam have received major relief from the Allahabad High Court in the two PAN cards case. A single bench of Justice Samit Gopal allowed their petitions seeking suspension of sentence and granted them bail. The court suspended Azam Khan’s 10-year sentence and Abdullah Azam’s seven-year sentence.
However, the High Court rejected their plea to stay the conviction. This means the trial court’s decision holding them guilty will remain in force for now. Criminal revision petitions challenging the decision have been filed on behalf of both, and the final hearing on them is still pending. The case relates to Abdullah Azam allegedly possessing and using PAN cards with two different dates of birth. It is alleged that an attempt was made to secure eligibility to contest elections by changing the date of birth in the second PAN card. A complaint was filed in the case in 2019.
Despite the grant of bail, the position on Azam Khan’s immediate release is not entirely clear. Legal proceedings in other cases and formalities related to warrants against him remain pending. Abdullah Azam’s release will also be possible only after the necessary documents are completed and the jail administration receives the order. The High Court’s decision has given both relief in this case, but the legal battle challenging the conviction will continue.
