CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Balram Jayanti was organised on the occasion of Hal Shashthi at Sarojini Naidu Government Girls Postgraduate Autonomous College, Bhopal, in compliance with the orders of the Higher Education Department, Government of Madhya Pradesh. The programme was organised by the Indian Knowledge Tradition Cell and the Department of Botany.
Dr Sanjay Sahay of the Department of Botany spoke about agriculture in India from the British period to the present progress of farming and the Green Agricultural Revolution. He said civilisation began with agriculture and that agriculture has great importance in the economy. He said the third and modern phase is biological farming, through which biodiversity began, affecting our health and leading to the exploitation of nature. He added that it is now our responsibility to pay attention to our health through controlled farming.
Principal Dr Pratima Yadav, speaking about Balram Ji, said Balram is a symbol of strength and hard work. She said Balram was regarded as the deity of agriculture, and that production based on nature is the best. As members of society, she said, it is our responsibility to oppose things that are harmful to our lives.
The chief speaker, Dr Mahendra Patil, drew attention to farming methods from the Treta Yuga to the Mahabharata period. He spoke about the agricultural almanac and zero-budget farming, saying that manure can be prepared at home using available materials without spending any money and can be used in farming. Dr Deepti Sankat, professor in the Department of Botany, said Balram is associated with agriculture and natural farming. Through a short film, she explained ancient and modern farming tools to the students.
Conducting the programme, Dr Nisha Jain, in-charge of the Indian Knowledge Tradition Cell, said Shri Balram is the revered deity of farmers and a symbol of strength and labour. She said the purpose of observing this programme is to make students aware of farming techniques that are ancient and traditional.
All members of the Indian Knowledge Tradition Cell, the college family and students were present on the occasion.
